Katie Mitchell PhysiotherapistKatie is a certified Physiotherapist who moved to Nelson from Australia in 2005 for her love of the Canadian mountains and passion for alpine skiing and mountain biking. She graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelors Degree in Physiotherapy in 1998. Prior to this she completed a Bachelors Degree in Sports Science at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Over the last 16 years she has travelled and worked as a physiotherapist in five different countries. She worked closely with leading knee and shoulder orthopaedic surgeons in Australia and has gained expansive knowledge and expertise in the management of orthopaedic injuries and rehabilitation. Her experience competing as an International alpine ski racer and national XC mountain biker, has led to a keen interest in injuries related to these sports. Achieving her Level 1 Alpine ski race coaching and treating Olympic ski and snowboard athletes, including the Australian alpine ski team, has also greatly influenced her expertise in the treatment of injuries related to these sports.

Over the last 16 years of her Physiotherapy career, she has undertaken further specialized training in Acupuncture, dry needling, orthopaedic manual and manipulative therapy, muscle energy techniques for the pelvis and lumbar spine, spinal mobilisations, sports taping, remedial massage, and specific soft tissue mobilisation. This has led to an excellent knowledge of acute and chronic musculo-skeletal conditions associated with lower back and neck pain, pelvic (sacroiliac joint) malalignment , osteoarthritis, tendinitis, postural dysfunction and whiplash disorders.

Katie believes in a “hands on” approach and exercise prescription in assisting her clients regain full function. Her philosophy is to educate the client so they understand their own injury. This not only relieves someone’s anxiety, but empowers them to help themselves.
